Workhorse Acoustic Response with a Striking Goldtop Finish

The Gibson J-45 Standard HiFi DNA in Goldtop takes the familiar round-shoulder dreadnought formula and gives it a far more distinctive visual edge. Under the gloss nitrocellulose lacquer, a solid Sitka spruce top works with solid mahogany back and sides and traditional hand-scalloped X-bracing to produce the warm mids, tight bass and balanced projection that define the J-45’s voice. It responds well to both controlled accompaniment and harder strumming, with enough dynamic range to follow changes in attack rather than flatten them out.

A SlimTaper mahogany neck keeps the profile relatively streamlined, and the 628.65 mm (24.75") scale contributes to a slightly softer string feel than a 647.7 mm (25.5") scale. The rosewood fingerboard has a 304.8 mm (12") radius, 20 standard frets and mother-of-pearl dot inlays. Down at the body, a traditional rosewood belly-up bridge carries a TUSQ saddle and bridge pins, while the black TUSQ nut and Grover Rotomatic tuners with kidney buttons complete the setup.

The Baggs HiFi DNA electronics are built around two lightweight sensors attached to the internal bridge plate rather than a conventional under-saddle element. Each sensor has its own custom-voiced Class A preamp, allowing the system to capture more of the soundboard’s movement alongside the strings. In practical terms, changes in touch, chord attack and picking intensity remain more apparent once you plug in. Volume and tone controls are tucked inside the soundhole for quick adjustment.
