Classic Analogue Vocoder, Choir and String Sounds with Hands-On Control

The Behringer VC340 is a 37-key analogue vocoder synthesizer built around the distinctive voice, choir and string textures associated with late-1970s and ’80s electronic music. Its full-size semi-weighted keys are velocity-sensitive, while 32 sliders and switches put the main sound-shaping controls directly on the panel.

The vocoder works by using your voice from a connected low-impedance dynamic microphone to shape the synthesizer signal, producing the familiar talking-synth effect rather than simply processing the microphone like a conventional vocal effect. A dedicated XLR mic input is provided, with the microphone itself not included.

The Human Voice and Strings sections can also be used for layered choir pads and string ensembles. Behringer’s multiple-stage analogue chorus uses BBD, or Bucket Brigade Delay, circuitry, which passes the signal through a chain of analogue delay stages to create the thick, gently modulated character associated with classic chorus effects.
