Stacked subharmonics and polyrhythms in a semi-modular analogue engine

The Behringer SPICE is a semi-modular analogue desktop synthesizer built for complex polyrhythms and dense subharmonic layering. Two analogue VCOs provide square and sawtooth waveforms, each supported by dedicated sub oscillators. Stacking the main oscillators with their subs creates up to six simultaneous sound sources, producing a thick, pseudo-polyphonic texture from a monophonic architecture.

A 24 dB ladder low-pass filter shapes the harmonic content with Cutoff, Resonance and envelope control, while separate VCA and VCF AD envelopes define amplitude and filter movement. Two independent 4-step analogue sequencers are driven by four polyrhythm generators, allowing interlocking rhythmic divisions that move beyond standard step sequencing. Variable quantisers enable interval control in either temperament or intonation, expanding melodic possibilities.

The semi-modular design requires no patching for immediate use, yet a 16 x 16 I/O matrix opens extensive CV routing. MIDI via 5-pin DIN or USB supports external sync and control.

At Riffs & Licks Music, we think SPICE suits electronic musicians who want analogue oscillator depth combined with hands-on polyrhythmic sequencing, particularly those exploring layered subharmonics and modular-style experimentation in a compact desktop format.
