Open-Back 5-String Tone for Clawhammer and Old-Time Playing

The Barnes and Mullins BJ350G Albert is an open-back 5-string banjo made for players who want a softer, more old-time voice than a louder resonator-equipped bluegrass banjo. Because the back is open, some of the sound projects back toward the player rather than being pushed forward, giving the banjo a quieter, more subdued response that suits clawhammer technique especially well.

The 670 mm (26.4”) scale length and 31 mm (1.22”) nut width give the BJ350G a familiar 5-string playing layout, while the mahogany neck and ovangkol fingerboard keep the fretting feel practical for open G, drop C, slides, pull-offs and rhythmic left-hand movement. The walnut rim, Remo Vellum head and maple bridge with ovangkol tip help shape a warm, percussive attack rather than the harder projection of a closed-back banjo.

At Riffs & Licks Music, we think this banjo is best for players exploring clawhammer, old-time folk and more intimate acoustic playing, where a lighter open-back response and comfortable 5-string feel matter more than maximum bluegrass volume.
